Technical Machine Announces Tessel 2 Development Platform

The device is designed to be embeddable at scale and features built-in Wi-Fi.

Technical Machine has introduced Tessel 2, an enterprise-grade embedded hardware platform that allows users to create Web-connected devices. This spans a variety of applications, from Internet-enabled manufacturing equipment to self-watering plants.

The Tessel 2, according to the company, is designed to be embeddable at scale, features built-in Wi-Fi and is compatible with Node.js/io.JS runtime. It can be used with tens of thousands Node software libraries directly out of the box.

The device incorporates plug-and-play hardware modules such as temperature sensors, cameras, servo motors and more. It is capable of being integrated into the circuit board without connectors. This feature, the company states, creates a cost-effective, integrated printed circuit board that enables users to get to market faster.

“We see a huge untapped market for all kinds of ‘Internet of Things’ goods,” said Rohit Sharma, venture partner with True Ventures, the company’s lead investor. “The challenge is that Web developers can write the code to run those items, but lack the electrical engineering expertise to build the hardware. The Tessel platform makes it easy for entrepreneurial Web developers to create connected devices inexpensively and efficiently, and Tessel 2 lets them take those devices into production.”

The Tessel 2 is available for pre-order, with shipping slated for August.
