Editor’s Pick: BOXX GoBOXX MXL and SLM Workstations

When it comes to mobile workstations for design, simulation and visualization, BOXX Technologies seems to take the adage “big things come in small boxes” in a big way. Today’s Pick of the Week is an example.

What BOXX has done this time is reconfigure its Windows-running GoBOXX MXL and GoBOXX SLM mobile workstations with Intel Skylake CPUs and the latest NVIDIA graphics for mobiles. Skylake is the code name Intel used when developing its 6th generation, quad-core Intel Core i7 series processors. These hyper-threaded babies can cruise along

anywhere from 2.6GHz to 4.0GHz, depending on the model. With turbo-boosted power when you need it, that 2.6GHz jumps to 3.5GHz. Now, couple that with up to 4GB of Quadro graphics and anywhere from 16GB to 64GB DDR memory, and your SOLIDWORKS modeling or 3ds Max rendering should pop.

The GoBOXX MXL series laptops can replace your desktop, according to BOXX, who actually compares it to one of its brawny APEXX 2 workstations. You can rig it with 15.6- or 17-in. 1080 pixel panels and even drive up to three additional external displays. The big 17-in. version weighs in at 8.6 lbs. with its eight-cell battery, which is big by being small.

The GoBOXX 15 SLM mobile workstation is an interesting bit of handicraft. Check out the picture of a GoBOXX 15 SLM folded next to a quarter in the second part of today’s message to see what I mean. That’s just 0.78-in. thick when closed. And it weighs 4.36 lbs. with its six-cell battery.

Yet the GoBOXX 15 SLM comes with a full HD (high definition) 15.6-in. panel or optional UHD resolution display, up to 32GB of DDR RAM, a full keyboard, SSD (solid-state drive) as well as hard drive storage and a bunch of ports. It’s built with NVIDIA Quadro M2000M graphics and either a 2.6GHz (3.5GHz Turbo Boost) quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU or a high-performance 2.9GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) Core i7. It should handle Inventor and the like with aplomb.
