There's a new short e-book (43 pages) available from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) that covers the roots of the computer-aided design (CAD) industry up to present day. Of the nine original CAD companies, JPR reports that only Dassault remains in this market. The other eight have been sold, merged, or shut down.

Presently, there are seven major CAD companies and 12 or so lesser companies, including companies with free CAD resources.

Looking back, CAD was created for aerospace and automotive companies, JPR reports. Additionally, CAD was at the base of all visual effects in movies and computer games. Now, dimensioning of imaginary landscapes and buildings is known as modeling though it is just CAD.

CAD is used to design skyscrapers, lawns, cars, and innumerable products in homes and offices. Wiring in airplanes, trains, and rocket ships is designed in CAD. CAD also allows items to be traceable and reproducible.

The new e-book on paths and investments in development of modern-day CAD tells how and who brought this design approach to the present.

Note this is not a product guide, so while several products are highlighted for historical significance, no single company is spotlighted. The e-book was not sponsored by any CAD company.

The e-book is the culmination of the authors’ experience, and is related to Jon Peddie Research’s World Wide CAD Report.
