Where once mass-producing one-size-fits-all parts or hand sculpting unique parts was the norm, AlloSource (Centennial, CO), a renowned U.S. non-profit bone and tissue provider, now manufactures custom spinal implants with Roland DGA Corporation’s (Irvine, CA) desktop milling machines. The company uses an assembly line of MDX-540s to quickly produce parts used in spine fusion surgeries.
The Roland desktop milling machines are also resistant to AlloSource’s extensive sanitization practices, a primary part of the manufacturing process. Roland Rapid Custom Manufacturing (RCM) technology facilitates the production of parts from prototype to final manufacture, and makes it possible to quickly produce parts that are a custom fit for each patient. Medical manufacturers can customize their designs on an individual case basis. In addition, RCM solutions allows manufacturers to choose from among a wide range of FDA-approved materials.
Other features of the Roland RCM technology are that only one machine is involved, and the workflow is seamless from prototype to production. Companies are able to produce more parts in a smaller work area and consume less energy toward green compliancy than traditional CNC production processes.
