Ford Motor Company has won the third annual Altair Enlighten Award for its use of lightweighted materials in the 2015 Ford F-150. The honor was presented at this year’s CAR Management Briefing Seminars, and acknowledges the company’s innovations in vehicle weight reduction.
Ford removed 700 lbs. from the Ford F-150 while improving performance, safety and efficiency, a company press release sates. It incorporated high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloys in the body to reduce weight.
“As America’s truck leader, Ford is honored to be named the 2015 Altair Enlighten Award winner for the all-new Ford F-150,” said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development and Chief Technical Officer, Ford Motor Company. “This award is recognition of our outstanding team members, who set out to build the best truck ever for our customers.”
The runner-up in this year’s awards was General Motors, who used CAE methods to reduce the Alpha architecture of the 2012 Cadillac ATS by 163 lbs. The software helped optimize lattice topology, structural bulkhead placement and address loadcases.
