VirtualGrid has announced the availability of VRMesh 5.0, the latest version of its 3D point cloud and mesh processing software. VRMesh 5.0 enables users to clean and simplify large-sized point clouds, generate high-quality triangulated meshes, and re-create NURBS surfaces for further manipulation in downstream applications.
Major new features in v5.0 include the ability to import large point clouds in excess of one billion points using what is known as index-attach technology. This technology allows you to create an indexed point-cloud file, retrieve inquiring points into the window, smooth and decimate the indexed point clouds, then generate a high-quality polygonal model. Version 5.0’s denoise, a high-precision noise correction function, and decimation capabilities are said to efficiently reduce the size of point clouds without sacrificing accuracy.
NURBS creation in VRMesh 5.0 has also been enhanced. It now offers the ability to automatically detect edge curves and construct wireframe curves, which allows for the creation of optimized NURBS surfaces from triangle-meshed objects.
Additional new features include support for the LIDAR (LIght Detection and Ranging) format used primarily for measuring elevation, the ability to export NURBS surfaces in IGES format, a new capability for restoring sharp edges along wireframe curves, and automatic multithreaded execution support for mulitcore systems. Also, existing users can now transfer a license from one computer to another.
According to the company, VRMesh 5.0 also incorporates many updates that improve the software’s usability and performance. Among these are increased accuracy for removing redundant points by adding a curvature factor; increased capabilities for triangulating high-noise point cloud data; and a best-fit mapping feature for manual registration. A native 64-bit edition of VRMesh is also available in v5.0.
The VRMesh family consists of four packages targeted to different usage requirements:
- VRMesh Studio: A comprehensive point-cloud processing and mesh modeling environment for industrial users requiring reverse engineering tools and design communication in a single package.
- VRMesh Reverse: A complete workflow for users to process large point clouds and generate an accurate meshed model.
- VRMesh Forward: An extension module that provides a step-by-step workflow to guide you from intelligent wireframe curve detection to NURBS surface creation.
- VRMesh Design: A solution for STL repair and conceptual design.
In a related announcement, VirtualGrid has released Cloud Decimator for AutoCAD 2011. This plug-in application, which provides the ability to perform point cloud processing within the AutoCAD environment, is said to give you the ability to accurately de-noise and simplify point clouds while preserving the data in regions where the points are required. It also provides abilities to remove redundant or isolated points, offset points, and show elevation using a color map. Cloud Decimator for AutoCAD 2011 is available in a 32-/64-bit edition. A 30-day trial version is offered.
Pricing for VRMesh ranges from $495 to $1,695, depending upon version. The Cloud Decimator for AutoCAD 2011 is available for $495. For complete details on VRMesh 5.0, visit VirtualGrid on the web.
