On June 28, IBM (Armonk, NY) and Dassault Systèmes (Paris, France)announced a new PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) industry solutionsaid to enable small- and mid-size industrial products companies toimprove design productivity and speed innovation by facilitating reuseof data and knowledge, re-adapted to a new context, from one project toanother. Called the Generative Mechanical Design (GMD) solution, IBMand Dassault say that companies can cut design time by up to 50 percentand can cut manufacturing and assembly time by up to 60 percent bydeploying the solution.

GMD is delivered through Collaborative Generative Design (CGD), a keycomponent of the integrated IBM PLM Express Portfolio, a suite of PLMsolutions for medium-sized businesses. It consists of CATIA V5 designand knowledgeware and SMARTEAM collaborative product development andstandardized parts repository applications; the accompanying GenerativeDesign Practices (GDP) Companion provides training materials and sampleproduct templates for learning, applying, and implementing the GMDapproach.

Companies can use the GMD solution to accelerate the entire productdesign process and enhance innovation through the capture and reuse ofdesign knowledge; automation of repetitive or tedious design tasks;encapsulation of design rules using standard parts; and enhancedcollaboration among design, simulation, and manufacturing.
