Stratasys (Minneapolis,MN) announced commercial shipment of its new FDM 900mc direct digital manufacturing machine has commenced. The company reports that it has taken a record number of orders for its large-format machines, preselling 17 units, which was far more than they expected.
While Stratasys additive fabrication machines were originally used strictly for rapid prototyping, the 900mc was developed specifically for use in direct digital manufacturing (DDM) applications. Customers in the automotive, aerospace, consumer product and heavy industry markets need DDM for low-volume manufacturing for either end-use parts or fabrication and assembly tools. The machines can also be used in high-end functional prototyping applications.
Press materials suggest that the 900mc development program rivals injection molding for accuracy and repeatability. The 900mc boasts a confidence factor of greater than 99%, and has an accuracy rating of +/- .005 inch ]or +/-.0015 inch per inch, whichever is greater] (+/- .127 mm ]or +/- .0015 mm per mm whichever is greater]).
