A free CD by COMSOL(Stockholm, SWEDEN) entitled “Introduction to the COMSOL ReactionEngineering Lab” teaches scientists and engineers how to accessmodeling techniques in order to accelerate the analysis of real-worldreaction applications.
According to a press release, a chemical process reactor is the keyelement to a process system despite being surrounded by other equipmentsuch as separators, filters, and cleaning equipment. Engineers havelong studied them closely, often using modeling techniques and computersimulations.
The CD focuses on three broad categories of tasks or modeling stages,presented with the help of real-world models. In the examples, usersare guided through the entire modeling process by an animatedaudio/visual presentation. All examples are based on modeling andsimulation in the COMSOL Reaction Engineering Lab.
The first section analyzes reaction performance in perfectly mixedsystems. This section includes example models from pharmaceuticals (theanalysis of the synthesis of ibuprofen) and process industries (theneutralization of chlorine in a scrubber).
The second compares results to experimental data and thenvalidates/calibrates a model, using an example from bioengineering thatexplores the degradation of pDNA in blood plasma.
The third section performs a space-dependent simulation in 1D, 2D, or3D. Two examples from the process industry illustrate this aspect andexplain chemical vapor deposition of GaAs, and it also includes aseparate study of competing reactions in a reactor.
