Editor’s Pick: Mobile Workstation Offers Ultra HD and 4GHz Turbo Boost

Here’s something that should inspire computer lust in you as well as envy from your coworkers if you decide to purchase it.

BOXX Technologies has a new member of its GoBOXX line of mobile workstations, the GoBOXX 15 SLM. I read somewhere on the Internet — so it must be true — that SLM stands for “slim.” And this thing is indeed slender: It weighs 4.36 lbs., and is just 0.78 in. thick. That, however, makes it the only slim feature about this system. This thing is all computing brawn.

The GoBOXX 15 SLM appears ready to fit right into your engineering workflow, whether you’re tossing something like Inventor, SolidWorks or Autodesk 3ds Max at it. Start with the CPU. You can get yourself a GoBOXX 15 SLM with either an Intel Core i7 4720HQ quad-core 2.6/3.6GHz Turbo Boost CPU or a high-performance Intel Core i7 4980HQ quad-core 2.8/4.0GHz Turbo Boost CPU. Now, toss in a 2GB NVIDIA card that pumps graphics to your 15.6 in. IPS (in-plane switching) technology-based LCD display with your option of Full HD or high-resolution Ultra HD screen.

Brief tangent: Full HD is great, but Ultra HD is ultra cool for a number of reasons. It gives you more than twice the pixels compared to those standard 1080p screens for high-end laptops. For those of you keeping track of numbers, the Ultra HD has 3840 x 2160 pixels and the other guys sport 1920 x 1080. What this means in practice is that you can visit your client and show them very high-fidelity models on your GoBOXX 15 SLM instead of borrowing a higher resolution external monitor from them.

Now couple Ultra HD with IPS technology. We’ll skip the electro-chemistry review about horizontally-aligned crystals and lateral electric fields. IPS technology gives you better contrast, colors and brightness at wider viewing angles. So, again, you and your clients, bosses, colleagues and whomever can crowd about your GoBOXX 15 SLM and check out your screen without people standing a bit to the side seeing the image as a splotch of muddy-looking pixelated goo.

The GoBOXX 15 SLM comes with a lot of memory, lots of SSD (solid-state drive) and disk storage, a bunch of ports for external devices, networking and other goodies. Wisely, it runs Windows 7 Professional and not Windows 8. Linux is optional. You can read more specs in today’s Pick of the Week write-up, but here’s something else interesting about the GoBOXX 15 SLM.

BOXX Technologies offers four versions of the GoBOXX 15 SLM, two of which are tweakable. The configurable models are a recommended base model and a Professional edition. You can learn about the gear they come with in the new product part of today’s write-up.

The other two are what BOXX calls “quick ship.” They are non-configurable versions of the recommended base and Professional editions. Well, you can extend the warranty. Essentially, this option gets a GoBOXX 15 SLM into your hands as soon as you want, including overnight. But what’s interesting about them is that they appear ready to go to work, which is something you really do not see when you start nosing around price lists.
