Siemens Simcenter updates its computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multiphysics simulation portfolio Simcenter STAR-CCM+. A variety of new features in version 2302 streamline workflow setup, process new flow possibilities and more.
The company says a new dedicated workflow for setting up electric vehicle (EV) battery thermal runaway propagation means a simulation can be ready in minutes instead of hours. The workflow simplifies preparation of large packs of hundreds of thousands of cells while retaining high fidelity. The new workflow also supports a straightforward simulation of a failed cell’s exothermal heat release with an empirical model.
The company says this new version can simulate the drying of electrode slurry in an industrial convection oven, part of the EV battery manufacturing process. The simulation uses the Discrete Element Method (DEM), extending on capabilities introduced in the previous release to simulate Lagrangian non-DEM particles.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ users who upgrade to 2302 will now have the option of running simulations using ARM CPU technology. ARM computing compatible with Simcenter STAR-CCM+ is currently available for the Linux OS, and available from some cloud vendors including AWS. Companies with access to the Fugaku supercomputer (Fujitsu) also have access to ARM.
Siemens has reworked the memory handling algorithms in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to reduce memory overhead when running on NVIDIA GPUs using CUDA. The company claims a memory requirement reduction of up to 40% and additional runtime performance improvements on top of the altready existing GPU-related speedups from previous versions of up to 10%. Siemens says a practical example is the new ability for a single Nvidia A100 with 80GB memory to fit 60 million trimmed cells in mixed precision.
Siemens Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 2303 is now available as an update from Siemens, or as a new product. For more details about the product, visit the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ update page.
