Machining is a continually evolving manufacturing technology. New equipment capabilities are constantly emerging, and machining is increasingly being used with a wider array of materials, including many plastics. To take advantage of the full capabilities of CNC machining, designers need to stay on top of these advancements and incorporate them into their design methodologies.
Protolabs has published a white paper, “Design Essentials for CNC Machining,” that provides valuable tips for designers to help reduce machining costs, improve results and determine where it is appropriate to use machining for plastic parts.
The paper includes specific design tips to help reduce the overall cost of part production; guidance on choosing between milling or a lathe; and how to incorporate threading into a design. In addition, Protolabs outlines how to determine whether a plastic part should be machined, 3D printed or manufactured using injection molding. While the company offers CNC machining and 3D printing services, factors such as the type of material, material waste, geometry and surface finish tolerances will affect which approach is best.
