The Mojo 3D Print Pack—a Mojo 3D Printer, a WaveWash 55 cleaning system, and a supply of materials to get your started—could be yours for free. In 2014, the prize went to Jacob Skaggs, a recent college graduate and project engineer at Century Elevators. The unit was delivered to Skaggs two days before Thanksgiving. Skaggs took advantage of the fortuitous timing by downloading and printing some timely tableware: place card holders shaped like a turkey and a classic Pilgrim’s hat. He observed, “I was actually surprised at how easy [the Mojo] was to set up. In a couple of hours, I was ready to print.”

On his second day as the proud owner of a new Mojo, Skaggs printed an eyebolt bracket needed for one of his projects at work. “I was able to design something based on what they told me, and then I was able to check my design and make sure we were on the same page, that my concept would work,” he said. In 2013, the winner was Joe Lutgen, who owns and runs his own engineering service firm, RSI Mechanical LLC. When Lutgen came across the call for sweepstakes entry in the wee hours of the morning, he entered out of sheer impulse, without expecting to actually win. But he did.

The printer was delivered in early December, so Lutgen printed some Christmas ornaments for his living room. “My hope is to develop a small printing service for [clients], so if they have components from other engineers or from myself, I’ll be able to print their parts overnight,” said Lutgen. In 2012, the prize was a uPrint 3D printer, also from Stratasys. The winner was Maegan Spencer, a R&D engineer at medical device maker Avinger Inc. (Spencer has since moved on to another firm.) She quipped, “I can’t tell my parents that I won something, because they don’t know what a 3D printer is.”

Spencer and her colleagues soon put the uPrint to good use at Avinger. They printed, among others, a personal iPad stand (designed by Nick Spinelli, Avinger), a tube cutter (designed by Charles McNall, Avinger), and a tailor-made test-device holder (designed by Charles McNall, Avinger).

Though the uPrint is a professional machine, Spender’s nephew might have also reaped some benefits from it. “My five-year-old nephew wants an action figure of himself,” Spencer recalled.
