24 Hours from Tulsa and Support Develops

No sooner had Intel Corp. (Santa Clara, CA) unveiled eight new Dual-Core Intel Xeon7100 series processors—codenamed “Tulsa”— than system vendors beganofficially announcing that they supported the new chips designed for MP(multiprocessor) servers. Among the companies announcing products areDell, HP, and Unisys. Fujitsu Computer Systems, IBM, andSupermicro Computer are known to preparing products, and Apple with itsrecent move over to Intel’s platform is thought to be on its way toTulsa too.

Intel’s says that the Dual-Core Xeon 7100 processor series offers up totwice the performance and nearly three times better performance perwatt over previous its Xeon MP processors. These processors are alsosocket compatible with the currently shipping platform.

According to Intel, servers based on these platforms are a suitablechoice for server consolidation—particularly in virtualizedenvironments—and for demanding enterprise jobs such as database,ERP,  CRM, and e-commerce applications.

Physically, Xeon 7100 series processors have more than 1.3 billiontransistors, and 16 MB of shared cache. The series is compatible withthe existing Intel E8501 chipset, and a 95-watt dual core option offersup to 40 percent less power consumption than the previous generationprocessor.

The PowerEdge 6800 and PowerEdge 6850 servers with Dual-CoreIntel Xeon 7100 Series processors from Dell (Round Rock, TX) areavailable now with prices starting at $6,900. Unisys (Blue Bell, PA)plans to begin delivering models of its ES7000/one server line with the Dual-Core Intel Xeon platform in the fourth quarterof 2006. IBM should begin shipping its first System x units with thenew Intel processors in October.
