Competition is the lifeblood of any truly healthy capitalist system. Competition drives innovation and brings down prices, creating a level playing field for consumers and businesses alike. Additive manufacturing (AM) is no exception to this principle, and new AM systems are popping up all over the place to challenge the status quo.
Most of these systems are of the hobbyist/Kickstarter variety, but occasionally a new company shows up with a product that can appeal to professionals. This could be the case with new startup, botObjects. The company is set to release its first product, a full color desktop 3D printer, come June.
While the woods may be full of 3D printers in general, full color systems are a bit rarer. botObject’s ProDesk3D is a material deposition system that uses a five color PLA cartridge system to build objects. The cartridges are filled with primary colors that, according to the company, can be mixed and matched to provide full color. The ProDesk3D also sports a dual-extruder head, comes with a self-calibrating build platform and runs on botObject’s ProModel software.
With the release still some distance in the future, not all details about the system have been revealed. The company is claiming 25µ prints, with a 275 x 275 x 300mm (10.8 x 10.8 x 11.8 in.) build area. That large a build area for a desktop 3D printer is fairly impressive, offering plenty of room for most prototyping needs.
As the release date draws closer, I’d expect to see more details (such as price) emerge, along with a spec sheet and some examples of full color prints. Lacking a video of the ProDesk3D to show you, below you’ll find a video that discusses the various ways AM has been put to use.
