Editor’s Pick: Océ PlotWave 340 & 360 Large-Format Print Systems Are Cloud Integrated

Everything gets more connected every day. And, as Martha Stewart would say, it’s a good thing. Um, well, yeah, for the most part it is. See, I find people staying connected via Twitter astoundingly mind-numbing. “Flossing b4 sleep. TTYL” is simply not a stay-connected tweet the world needs to know so that it can relax unless it’s flashed by Anthony Weiner. Whatever, today’s Pick of the Week is about the kind of connectivity that’s very much a good thing.

The people at Canon Solutions America recently announced their new Océ PlotWave 340 and Océ PlotWave 360 large-format monochrome printing systems. The primary difference between the two seems to be with print speeds: They range from 10 linear feet per minute with the Océ PlotWave 340 to 13 linear feet per minute with the Océ PlotWave 360. So, the first thing you know is that they’re fast.

These units appear to have a lot going for them. For example, they have a new 10.4-inch LCD touch-panel user interface called the Océ ClearConnect. Now, this is not just another screen like at the grocery store that has you bop a button or two and calls it interaction. This is a multi-touch panel with gestured-controlled touch software. This means that you can call up a document and pan, zoom, and swipe it like you do with your tablet and mobile devices. You can bop the button to print, and you can see the orientation of documents through a live preview while doing a scan or copy job.

As cool as the touch-panel sounds, the most productive part is that these systems look engineered to help you stay connected throughout all the different kinds of work scenarios that confront you all the time. At the office, you can wander over to the unit, stick in a USB drive and use the cool touch-panel features. You can hit print from your desk and send a document over the company’s network. You can use a smartphone app to access your Océ PlotWave 340/360 and print a file on the phone over a Wi-Fi connection. And you can yank a file to the printer from a cloud-enabled workflow and scan it to the cloud. In other words, you’re connected to a large-format, multi-function print system from home, the office, on site with a client, or while vacationing in Boise. And that’s a good thing.
