Actually printing an object from an additive manufacturing (AM) system is generally the easy part of the process. Building the digital design required for that first print takes much, much longer, and requires specialized knowledge. Even if you are able to scan the object to be 3D printed, you still have to invest in the scanning equipment.

Taiwan’s XYZ Printing may not be able to help you with developing your own digital designs, but the company’s new AM system is capable of assisting you with digital scans. Named the da Vinci 1.0AiO, the new system combines a scanner and a 3D printer that both share the same rotating build table.

The scanning half of the systems uses slit laser triangulation, capable of scanning a 15 x 15 cm object, with a scan accuracy of 0.25 mm, and a scan resolution of 0.25 mm. What do those specs mean? They mean don’t expect super detailed digital models, but the system is still usable for objects that require less detail.

The 3D printer side of the system uses a Fused Filament Fabrication (essentially Fused Deposition Modeling) process. Other specs are similar to the original da Vinci system, and are as follows:

  • Build Envelope: 7.48 x 7.8 x 7.8 in. (19 x 20 x 20 cm)
  • Resolution: From “Fine” 0.1 mm (100 microns) to “Ultra Fast” 0.4 mm (400 microns)
  • Filament: 1.75 mm
  • Materials: PLA/ABS
Other relevant stats to keep in mind are the size and weight of the da Vinci 1.0AiO. While it is technically a desktop system at 18.5 x 20 x 22 in. (47 x 51 x 56 cm), that’s gonna require a fair sized desk not to be in the way. The system also weighs in at 60 lbs., so you won’t want to have to move it around very often. If you aren’t troubled by the size and weight, a new da Vinci 1.0AiO can be yours via Amazon for $799 (free shipping with Prime).
