XtremeWorkstation for High-Performance Computing, 2 in a Series

By DE Editors

April 4, 2007

Dear Desktop Engineering Reader:

Appro International first made its name with rugged rack-mounted computers more than 15 years ago. In 2000, it deftly shifted focus to HPC — high-performance computing. Soon, it was recognized as an HPC powerhouse, whether you were talking about servers, cluster solutions, storage subsystems, or high-end workstations. Recently, the company introduced a new XtremeWorkstation, a personal supercomputer that adds further proof Appro is a technology leader.

Described as a mid to high-end x86 system, the XtremeWorkstation really is an awesome unit for compute- and memory-intensive technical jobs like MCAD, CAE, 3D modeling, and petroleum visualization. Check it out: dual or quad AMD Opteron 8000 series processors, up to 128GB memory, terabytes of storage, high-end NVIDIA graphics, and expansion slots galore.

We’re currently working on a review of this unit — it should be ready in the July or August time frame. For now, read more about the XtremeWorkstation in today’s Pick of the Week write-up. While there, click the link to sign up for an interesting white paper describing how the parallel processing power of an Appro system faired on the Fluent benchmark.

Thanks, Pal.

XtremeWorkstation for High-Performance Computing

New Appro workstation handles compute-intensive applications.

High-performance enterprise computing system provider Appro International, Inc. (Milpitas, CA) describes its new Appro XtremeWorkstation as designed to handle compute- and memory-intensive technical workloads such as those typically encountered by MCAD, CAE, petroleum visualization, automotive, aerospace, electronic design, DCC, 3D modeling, and CAD professionals. When equipped with 128GB of memory, the XtremeWorkstation provides more than four times the graphics, processor, and memory bandwidth of its predecessors. Additionally, compared to prior models, it offers memory latency that is 25 percent lower and twice the compute power.
