CFD Support has released Turbomachinery CFD, an open-source CFD software package and methodology based on OpenFOAM software. The methodology covers the complete path from basic (usually CAD) data through CFD analysis to significant engineering results, the company says. It is fully compatible with standard OpenFOAM and other software packages. It was originally designed for simulating rotational machines, but it can be used for a wide range of other CFD simulations, according to the company.

The package contains a detailed manual including representative tutorials that guide the user through the process from the basic model data to final results. Once the tutorial is completed, the user can repeat the whole process with their own data.

The software is highly customizable, and the company provides full training and support.

For this methodology the company has developed special OpenFOAM boundary conditions that, for example, can handle the rotor-stator interface or boundary conditions for the inlet and the outlet of the computational domain. The solver for Turbomachinery CFD was tested on real machine cases and can handle extreme flow conditions. Fluid and solid parts of computational model are solved, and heat transfer between them is included.

The package also contains a number of scripts, OpenFOAM utilities and OpenFOAM function objects for preprocessing and postprocessing. The computational mesh is created using the OpenFOAM utility snappyHexMesh.
