The TOP500 has released its list of the world's top supercomputers, which show an increase of accelerated systems. For the first time, a press release states, more than 100 accelerated systems on the list, accounting for 143 petaflops. NVIDIA Tesla-based systems comprise 70 of the systems on the TOP500, reflecting compound annual growth of nearly 50% over the past five years.
The main drivers of high-performance computing accelerated system adoption are Moore's law, the increase of GPU (graphics processing unit) accelerated applications and more investment in accelerators, supercomputing sites and hyperscale datacenters.
Some systems that use NVIDIA Tesla accelerators include Titan, Lomonosov 2 and Piz Daint.
“One day, all supercomputers will be accelerated,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer at NVIDIA. “Leading supercomputing sites around the world have turned to GPU-accelerated computing, reflected in today’s TOP500 list. As the pace of discovery accelerates and researchers turn to computation, machine learning and visualization, we fully expect to see this trend increase.”
