SolidWorks (Concord, MA) and COSMOS users can now easily import part materialinformation from a growing collection of 47,000 material data sheetsthrough a new partnership with online information provider MatWeb. Thispartnership makes MatWeb (Blacksburg, VA) the preferred material data provider to COSMOScustomers, with COSMOS referring customers to the MatWeb site forsearches and subscriptions for building customized material dataarchives on their computers.

MatWeb’s searchable archive provides engineers with more than 900,000data points on the physical, mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical, and processing properties of the materials in their designs. It has acustomized engine that exports data in native SolidWorks/COSMOS formatfrom the archive into the SolidWorks/COSMOS interface. MatWeb’s precisedescriptions of a material’s properties enable COSMOSWorks softwareusers to accurately predict its behavior.

“We’ve seen a demand for this kind of service growing over the last fewyears,” said Dale O. Kipp, director of MatWeb. “Engineers want to havematerial properties available without too much effort, and withoutconstantly referring to paper manuals or anything else that takes themout of their design environment. Now they can click on a material sheetand the information will automatically flow into their designenvironment.”

COSMOS users can search the MatWeb archive and read material datasheets for free. If they want to download information directly ontotheir computers, MatWeb charges a subscription fee.

“The better the material information, the more accurate the analysis,“said Suchit Jain, vice president of analysis products at SolidWorks.“MatWeb has one of the most comprehensive materials archives in theindustry, encompassing hundreds of different plastics and metals.Giving COSMOS users the ability to build their own libraries ofspecific materials will help them validate designs more precisely earlyin the process, saving on material and prototyping costs.”
