Society of Women Engineers Announces Achievement Award Winner

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) announced that University of Toronto’s Cristina Amon is the recipient of the 2011 Achievement Award. She is being honored for contributions to the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer; achievements in integration of practice, research and education; and active commitment to gender diversity in engineering.

Amon is dean of the faculty of applied science and engineering at the University of Toronto. Her mentoring and support initiatives have resulted in the growth of women engineering faculty, women assistant professors, women in faculty leadership and female undergraduate engineering enrollment.

Previously, Amon was Raymond J. Lane Distinguished Professor and director of the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems at Carnegie Mellon University. She earned her M.S. and Sc.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Simon Bolivar University, Venezuela.
