Sharp has developed the Free-Form Display, a shape that enables new display designs to match a variety of applications.
The device can be shaped to fit specific needs, with the help of IGZO technology and proprietary circuit design methods, the company states. While traditional LCD displays require a minimum with to account for bezels and drive circuits, the Free-Form display disperses the drive circuit function throughout surrounding pixels. This allows the bezel to be shrunk and design the LCD to whatever shape is necessary.
One possible application of this technology, Sharp states, is a single instrument panel on a car dashboard which combines the speedometer and other monitors.
While the Free-Form Display is still in the prototype stage, the company plans to enter the mass-production stage at the earliest possible date.
