SGI Launches ICE XA Supercomputer
December 3, 2014
SGI, a provider of high-performance computing (HPC) solutions, has developed a sixth generation supercomputer. The SGI ICE XA allows scientists, researchers and engineers to achieve and accelerate computational breakthroughs at Petascale and with a high return on investment, the company states.
The system is designed to run HPC workloads at petaflop speed. Compute nodes are quipped with the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v3 series and can be augmented with Xeon Phi coprocessors or NVIDIA GPU (graphic processing unit) accelerators. It is also gauged to provide up to 191 teraflops per rack and grow to tens of thousands of nodes with minimal increase in overhead.
The ICE XA features second generation SGI cell technology and a closed-loop airflow. This design ensures no air from within the cell is mixed with data center air.
With SGI, users have access to in-house developed codes, optimum flexibility in processor and accelerator mix, blade and storage configuration and reduced operational cost. Different Linux operating systems can be provisioned on different nodes, providing a range of HPC applications to run simultaneously.
