Second Annual Extreme Redesign and 3D Printing Contest Announced

The Dimension 3D Printing Group (Minneapolis, MN), a business unit of Stratasys, Inc.(Eden Praire, MN), announced this week the launch of its second annualExtreme Redesign: The Ultimate 3D Printing Challenge. The global designand 3D printing contest for high school and college students will awardscholarships to student winners.

Whether it’s a new perspective on an everyday product or a fresh visionfor updating a famous piece of art, animation, or architecture,Dimension is calling on computer-aided-design (CAD) students worldwideto send in their most creative, useful, and innovative ExtremeRedesigns.

“The contest gives students who have ever had a unique idea forextending the capabilities or enhancing the aesthetics of a part,product, or piece of art a venue to share their ideas,” said Jon Cobb,vice president and general manager of 3D printing for Stratasys. “Lastyear, we received more than 100 amazing design entries from some of thebest and brightest student engineers, artists, and inventors worldwide.We anticipate this year’s contest to be even more popular as studentsaround the world become inspired and challenged not only by thiscontest, but also with the possibilities of a career in designengineering.”

To enter, students send a .stl file of their Extreme Redesign toDimension along with a completed submission form, including a 200-worddescription of the value and benefit of the part. Dimension will thensend entrants a 3D print of their redesign for evaluation. From there,entrants have the opportunity to make any necessary design improvementsand develop a second iteration for final submission.

Final submissions must be postmarked by December 31, 2005. A panel ofindependent judges from various industries will judge final entries onthe basis of creativity, usefulness, part integrity, and aesthetics.Winners will be selected in February 2006 and will receive $2,500 or$1,000 scholarships.
