IHS, an industry research firm, has released a report titled “The Pulse of Engineering: The Changing Work Environment for Engineers Today.” The study discusses some of the challenges that engineers currently face and mindsets of the industry. According to the firm, more than 2,100 engineers and technical professionals responded.
The study states that current engineers are dealing with more complex designs, shorter cycles and increasing environmental regulations.
Some of the findings include:
- 52% of engineers said the pace of engineering is accelerating, while 57% said they were tasked with less.
- Respondents agreed designs are becoming more complex while design cycles are shortening and time-to-market pressures are increasing.
- Approximately seven in 10 respondents explained resource constraints, specialized knowledge, budgets and time were causing difficulty in the workflow.
- 90% of respondents cited designing and developing environmentally sustainable products as part of their work.
