Play-Doh 3D Printer Hottest New Toy for Kids

Last November, Rapid Ready spoke to additive manufacturing (AM) guru Terry Wohlers, and he predicted the first big home 3D printer would be one made for kids. Now that prediction may come true with the Play-Doh 3D Printer from ThinkGeek.

This new AM system can print in multiple colors by mixing and matching different containers of Play-Doh. Worried about the kids breaking a delicate piece of technology? The Play-Doh printer operates using two different hand cranks instead of expensive electronics. One squishes Play-Doh down through feeder tubes and moves the extruder head, while the other operates the conveyor belt for continual printing.

Normally I’d start in about technical specs, but, honestly, the objects created with this new AM system are made from Play-Doh, and I doubt your kids really care about layer resolution. The system comes bundled with a handy app for your kids to design their Play-Doh creations before they begin printing.

Remember me reviewing all those Kickstarter 3D printers and tutting about the price point being too high for individual investment? Well, the Play-Doh 3D Printer is priced competitively. The entire system clocks in at a measly $49.99, making it an affordable choice for almost any household.
