NASA Langley Research Center is the first government member of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) in Richmond, Va. The CCAM is an applied research center that provides advanced manufacturing solutions to its member companies.
NASA joins Canon Virginia, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Aerojet, Buehler, Mechdyne, and others in the partnership.
According to an announcement from CCAM, NASA will provide access to government facilities and programs, and provide liaisons to CCAM’s Industrial Operations Board and Technical Advisory Council. NASA scientists can conduct research at CCAM and NASA Langley as part of the collaboration, and work with other industry partners, as well as the University of Virginia, Virginia State University, and Virginia Tech.
The CCAM pools financing and research capabilities among the university and industry partners ,and shares the results of its R&D among members in order to spread risk and costs, while leveraging greater development capabilities. Its 62,000-sq.-ft. facility in Prince George County (which opened this past May) includes large-scale production labs, a thermal spray coating cell, a Die Sink EDM cutting machine, laser powder deposition, 5-axis cutting, and other equipment.
