Materialise held its second 3D printed slot car racing challenge at this year’s RAPID 2014 conference in Detroit, MI. Launched last year, the contest gives one year for participants to design and manufacture their design — which have included a 1955 Ford pickup replica, hot rods and even an ice cream truck.
On Tuesday, a total of 25 contestants raced in the slot car championship. The winner this year was Stewart Murray from Takata. Prizes were also awarded for:
- Fastest Car: GE Global Research
- Most Innovative Use of 3D Printing: Solid Thinking
- Most Original: Hyphen
- Crowd Favorite: Legacy Effects

In addition to the competition, Materialise showcased its 3D printing software and solutions portfolio. This included Sintermodule and e-Stage for automation, integration and streamlining the entire prototyping process. It also launched MiniMagicsPRO, a software for viewing STL files and generating quotes.
