Jon Peddie Research (JPR) makes available its 2022 Worldwide Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Market Report. The CAD market has always been a signpost for the health of the world’s architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) and manufacturing industries, according to JPR. Its growth is an indicator of expansion for many market segments and infrastructure as companies update and acquire software licenses to prepare for upcoming projects.
Jon Peddie Research divides its CAD market report into two super-segments: AEC and Manufacturing.
“The software tools to support the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction; infrastructure; process and power; and Manufacturing industries are resource-hungry. In addition, high revenues and a large user base mean the CAD market influences hardware design for PCs, graphics hardware, servers, and even mobile devices,” says Kathleen Maher, co-founder and vice president of Jon Peddie Research.
CAD Market Shipments Increased
The CAD industry earned $9.4 billion in revenue in 2021 compared to $8.8 billion in 2020, according to JPR's estimates.
The CAD market is stronger than ever, thanks to the engine of digitalization, which affects all aspects of design and engineering in every discipline, according to JPR. The arrival of CAD along with standardized network protocols signaled the birth of digitalization for design and engineering in the 1980s. The fulfillment of digitalization's promise is taking shape now along with the introduction and inclusion of digital twins, according to JPR.
The large CAD customers in the automotive, aeronautics, construction, machine design, plus process and power industries are gravitating towards system design. The market is transitioning from packaged software tools to building systems to support projects from conceptualization to implementation. Customers now have the upper hand and are pressuring suppliers to ensure software tools from different companies are compatible.
JPR considered data from over 36 CAD companies that offer more than 53 products. In this report, JPR concentrated on the 10 market leaders: Autodesk, Aveva, Bentley Systems, Dassault, Graebert, Hexagon, Nemetschek, PTC, Siemens Digital Industries and Trimble.
The report reviews the market according to the major segments. It provides overall market share figures and market share for significant segments, including AEC, Manufacturing, Process, Power & Marine, with sections on building information modeling and geographic information systems. In addition, JPR breaks out user numbers for 2D vs. 3D and major market segments. JPR includes its opinions on trends, results and issues.
The report highlights CAD industry trends, drivers and challenges. JPR incorporated the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the industry.
Equipped with improved collaboration and project management tools, the CAD industry is poised for growth in 2022.
