HP Upgrades Z Workstations

HP Inc. has upgraded its Z workstation portfolio with increased system performance and it has added the HP Z Turbo Drive G2 to its line up of SSDs (solid-state drives). In a related announcement, HP unveiled its new HP Z1 G3 workstation, which, it says, delivers more performance in a smaller and thinner unit than previous all-in-one systems. All units are now shipping.

The refreshed HP Z840, Z640 and Z440 desktop workstations feature next generation multi-core Intel Xeon processors, the latest AMD FirePro and NVIDIA Quadro graphics options, as well as a user’s choice of Microsoft or Linux operating systems. With the new Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 series processors, HP says that its Z workstations will support faster memory speeds than the previous generations, up to 2400MHz, and can support as many as 44 physical cores per workstation.

HP says that its new, second generation Z Turbo Drive G2 with 1TB storage capacity has four times the read performance of traditional SSDs at a competitive price point. HP Z Turbo Drive G2 is also available in versions for storing 256GB and 512GB of data.

“The addition of our latest Z workstations and Z Turbo Drive demonstrate HP’s unwavering commitment to professionals who consistently push the limits of technology to bring the world and the universe life changing innovations,” said Jeff Wood, vice president, Worldwide Product Management, Workstations and Thin Clients, HP, in the press announcement. “As the requirement of big data intensifies, the HP Z portfolio will continue providing increased reliability, performance and innovation for customers working on everything from mission critical space endeavors to energy exploration and blockbuster films.”

The HP Z1 G3 All-in-One workstation is 47% smaller and 51% lighter than the previous generation, according to the company. It features a 23.6-in. diagonal anti-glare UHD (ultra high-definition) 4K display, up to 64GB ECC memory, NVIDIA Quadro graphics and Intel Core i3 or Xeon processor options. The company adds that users can also have dual PCIe HP Z Turbo Drives for maximizing storage. The HP Z1 G3 supports Windows 10 Pro and Linux operating systems. It weighs 23.2 lbs.

The Energy Star Qualified Configuration HP Z1 G3 can be configured with real-time RAID data backup and a USB external DVD writer. It comes with integrated gigabit networking, two USB 3.0 (one charging) ports, two Thunderbolt 3/USB 3.1 (USB Type-C connectors), one SD 4.0 media card reader and one headphone/microphone combination connection.

Base pricing for the HP Z1 G3 All-in-One workstation starts at starting at $1498. A recommended configuration of the HP Z1 G3 on the HP Store website is equipped with an Intel Core i5-6500 processor, 4GB of memory, 2GB NVIDIA Quadro M1000M graphics, an HP Wireless keyboard and mouse, 1TB of SATA storage, an adjustable stand and Windows 10 Pro 64 begins at $2,795.

Estimated U.S. pricing for the HP Z440, Z640 and Z840 Workstations starts at $1,299, $1,759 and $2,399, respectively, according to the HP Store. The HP Z Turbo Drive G2 1TB PCIe estimated U.S. pricing starts at $799, when configured in a Z Workstation. The 256GB and 512GB versions of HP Z Turbo Drive G2 are listed at $299 and $549 on the HP Store website.
