Graphing and Data Analysis System Upgraded

OriginLab Corp. (Northampton, MA) has announced the release of version 8.5.1 of its Origin and OriginPro graphing and data analysis software for scientists and engineers. The company reports that “significant improvements in Origin 8.5.1 span all major areas of the software, including the worksheet, importing and exporting, graphing, and data analysis.” Two new data analysis “Gadgets” and a graph reconstruction tool are key features of this latest release, according to the company.

OriginLab says its Gadgets for data analysis, previously introduced in version 8.5, provide an intuitive interface for immediately performing data analysis on a selected region of data. The new Cluster Manipulation and Quick Peaks Gadgets, both developed for Origin 8.5.1 in response to customer requests, are intended to provide users easier ways to perform common tasks.

“We recognize that users often need a quick way to either perform descriptive statistics or need to mask, clear, or delete extraneous data on a certain region of data,” explains OriginLab founder Dr. CP Yang, in a press statement. “There is no better way to do this than to simply highlight the range graphically with either a rectangle or circular shaped ROI indicator and then click a button. This is now what the Cluster Manipulation Gadget offers.”

The Quick Peaks Gadget allows you to identify the peak locations within a region of interest in a spectrum. Support is provided to output over 15 selectable peak parameters, including peak location in x/y, area, and centroid location. A “Fit Peaks” context menu allows you to then switch to multiple peaks fitting after finding peaks.

The Digitizer graph reconstruction tool, once a downloadable tool on the OriginLab website, has been revamped and integrated into Origin as a floating dialog-based tool. A do-it-yourself graph reconstruction tool said to provide a mechanism for quickly checking your research against published results, the Digitizer is described as enabling you to import a scanned image of a graph. Once you import the graph, you can then manually create representative datasets that come close to the original image data, according to the company.

OriginPro 8.5.1 offers all the new Origin features and adds new surface fitting with multiple 3D peaks using Origin’s NLFit dialog. Multiple peak finding methods are provided. Once peaks are detected, you can proceed with fitting while sharing and/or constraining parameters as desired, says the company.

Origin 8.5.1 and OriginPro 8.5.1 run on Windows NT 4.0 or later, Windows 2000, Windows XP or later, or Windows Vista, or Windows 7 running on 1.0 GHz or higher Pentium-compatible platforms with a DVD drive, 500MB of free hard-disk space, and a minimum of 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended). The software is available in many different forms ranging from a single-user package to multiple-copy licenses that include concurrent license management, allowing you to install the software on as many computers as you need. Origin can also be applied as an OEM solution for instrument manufacturers.
