Eurocom Ships Neptune 4W Mobile Workstation

Company also announces 1TB hard-disk drive upgrade option for its mobile workstations.

Eurocom Corp. has launched the Neptune 4W, which it describes as a professional grade, fully-upgradeable mobile workstation. The system has NVIDIA Quadro graphics, an Intel Core i7 processor (up to Intel Core i7- 4940MX Processor Extreme), 32GB memory and up to 6.5TB of storage. In a complementary announcement, Eurocom also announced the availability of the 1TB Hitachi Travelstar Z5K1000 hard-disk drive (HDD) as optional equipment for its line of high-performance laptops and mobile workstations.

The Neptune 4W offers VGA graphics upgradeability with its Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM) 3.0b interconnect for NVIDIA K5100M, K3100M, K2100M or K1100M graphics accelerators. It also can be outfitted with AMD R2-290X graphics. It has a 17.3-in. matte or glossy display with high gamut and contrast to provide optimized image quality. The Neptune 4W supports 64-bit Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 operating systems as well as Ubuntu Linux.

Engineers can add up to 6.5TB of RAID storage through three standard storage drive bays and two mSATA (mini Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) solid state drives (SSDs). The workstation has three USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0, a DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI out and a FireWire 400 slot.

The Neptune 4W has an illuminated backlit keyboard with seven user-customizable colors. For security, the Neptune 4W has three security layers, including the Kensington Lock Slot and a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Unit dimensions are approximately 16.56 x 11.44 x 10 in. (414 x 286 x 25.3 mm), and the Neptune 4W weighs 9 lbs. (4.1 kg).

“Eurocom developed the Neptune 4W, the fourth generation of workstations for professionals that desire one system to handle their entire workload,” said Mark Bialic, president, Eurocom in a press statement. “The Neptune 4W is powerful enough and combined with a large 17.3-in. display can replace your desktop, while mobile enough to take nearly anywhere.”

According to Eurocom, the compact, two-disk Hitachi 1TB Travelstar Z5K1000 drive is the industry’s fastest 7.0 mm HDD. The company adds that the drive also offers the industry’s highest operating shock at 400G/2ms and non-operating shock at 1000G/1ms and that the Travelstar delivers a nearly silent operation at 2.1 idle/2.2 seek decibels.

Eurocom reports that the self-encrypting Travelstar is compatible with its full line of RAID-capable SSDs, mSATA and next generation form factor M.2 drives. It has a 26% slimmer z-height compared to comparable drives of its size, weighs only 95 grams (3.3 oz.) and is equipped with bulk data encryption from HGST. Miscellaneous technical specifications for the 1TB Travelstar Z5K1000 include advanced format, 512-byte emulation; 6Gb/s SATA interface; dual-stage actuator (DSA) tracking control for higher recording density; 5400 RPM spin speed; 600,000 load/unload cycles; and a 32MB data buffer.
