Bigger isn’t always better. While many additive manufacturing (AM) systems seem to be focused on growing larger and larger build envelopes, you don’t always need bigger parts. Micro laser sintering looks to be growing in popularity for the usual reasons AM is popular: speed and freedom of design.
EOS and 3D Micromac are hoping to hit the peak of the micro interest with the formation of a new company dedicated to micro laser sintering named 3D MicroPrint.
“Demand for very small parts which are difficult to manufacture using conventional processes is rising tremendously,” said Dr. Hans J. Langer, founder and CEO of EOS. “Micro Laser Sintering provides solutions for three major trends: individualization, functional integration, and miniaturization.”
“Working with layer thicknesses of ≤ 5 µm, focus diameters of ≤ 30 µm and powder particle size of ≤ 5 µm, the MLS technology opens up new dimensions,” added Joachim Göbner, one of the business managers of 3D MicroPrint. “With MLS it is even possible to produce moveable component assemblies.”
Göbner, formerly project head MLS at EOS and head of the technical centre Chemnitz, and Tino Petsch, CEO of 3D-Micromac, were appointed as business managers of the new company. The company’s headquarters is located in Chemnitz, Germany, and has already set up shop on the Chemnitz Smart Systems Campus. Additional facilities are on the slate for construction. 3D MicroPrint will look to provide services for the automotive, medical and jewelry industries.
