Dear Desktop Engineering Reader:
Today is the birthday of both William Shakespeare and Shirley Temple Black, data you probably did not expect, nor particularly want, in an engineering correspondence. Data that you do not particularly expect or want is a frequent result with some so-called portable coordinate measurement machines (CMMs) that require a degree in weight-lifting to set up and move about. For more than 30 years ROMER has been helping engineers get the best results by making articulated arms that are ergonomic, easy to use, and accurate. Its new INFINITE 2.0 Series is truly infinite in faculties to make your job easier and more productive as well as tame the shrew of not-so-portable portable CMMs.
The INFINITE 2.0 Series portable CMM spans measuring ranges of 4 to 12 feet, with a volumetric length accuracy of +/-0.0006-in. But it’s the ease of use that gave me bright eyes. Rotating grips on the arm at the elbow and forearm provide low-friction grip positions, and integrated counterbalances offset arm and probe weight. That last one means that not only can you operate the INFINITE 2.0 with one hand, but you retain the use of your joints for later in life or what you will. And just around the corner of the base, INFINITE 2.0 arms have a new probe holster for easy access and storage of probes.
The series also integrates advanced kinematic probes with automatic probe recognition, which means that probes are plug and play. INFINITE 2.0 also has an integrated USB digital camera to document work setups and an LED worklight.
At the top end, all’s well that ends well with the INFINITE 2.0 SC. This turnkey system comes with a ScanShark noncontact laser scanning probe capable of gathering more than 458,000 points per second, a laptop or desktop computer, and PolyWorks 3D metrology software platform from InnovMetric. Measure for measure, 458,000 points a second is something that’ll make you stand up and cheer.
You can learn more about ROMER’s new INFINITE 2.0 Series of portable CMMs from today’s Pick of the Week write-up. There are also all sorts of links to check out including a video link and signing up for demo. Many portable CMMs end up being stowaways because they are much ado about nothing. The INFINITE 2.0 Series from ROMER is a portable CMM as you like it.
Thanks, Pal – Lockwood
