Leap Motion Inks Deal with HP

The manner in which we interact with our electronics has evolved over the years. It began with borrowing the keyboard from typewriters, then we got the mouse, next came touch screen technology. The next generation of interactivity looks to be gesture control, and HP is jumping on board courtesy of Leap Motion.

Engineering on the Edge covered Leap Motion’s gesture control, named Leap, a while ago, and it appears the system is now ready for the big leagues. Leap has moved beyond the Kinect, from which it drew its inspiration, and will soon be bringing its brand of fine motion control to a laptop or workstation near you.

“Our focus at Leap Motion is to fundamentally improve how people interact with their devices, and offer as many ways as possible to achieve that vision,” said Leap Motion co-founder and CEO Michael Buckwald. “The possibilities for innovation are incredible, when you think about what will come from this collaboration between two respected global leaders in their fields — HP, the world's largest technology company and Leap Motion, creator of the world's most powerful 3D motion-control technology.”

The deal will see the Leap Motion Controller bundled with select HP computers sometime later this summer. Airspace, Leap Motion’s app store, will also come pre-loaded on these computers. Commercial success for a gesture control system would likely bring about competitors offering their own version of the technology, which could usher in a new era of interactivity.
