Hexagon Metrology (North Kingstown, RI), the parent company of ROMER CimCore(Wixom, MI), announces the North American debut of a patent-pending CNCarticulated measuring arm at the Fabtech show at McCormick Place,Chicago, on November 13-16, 2005.

The pre-production arm incorporates the components of a ROMER Infinitemeasuring arm and applies CNC motion to create a measuring arm thatcombines the portability of an arm CMM with the programmability andrepeatability of a fixed CMM.

“Articulated measurement arms were always manual devices…until now,“said Homer Eaton of ROMER CimCore, who invented articulated arm CMM’sin the 1970’s and now has created the CNC arm at Hexagon Metrology.“The CNC version frees the operator from repetitive or awkwardmeasuring tasks, which can be subject to operator fatigue, and thusaffects the repeatability of the results.”

The CNC arm can be configured in many different ways, depending theapplication. Probing options include laser scanning non-contact probes, touch probes, or infrared tube measuring probes. The unit’s weight, at88 pounds, lends itself to portability options unimaginable with afixed CNC CMM. For example, the arm can be cart-mounted, so it can beliterally driven to, or into, the measurement location. It can bemounted in many different positions and configurations, including fixedlinear rail or tripod.
