ASSESS Initiative has released a Strategic Insight Paper related to the ASSESS Generative Design Theme.
.
The ASSESS initiative has been organized around a key set of themes associated with expanding the usage and benefit of engineering simulation:
- Align: Alignment of commercial, research and government efforts
- Business: Business challenges
- Credibility: Engineering simulation credibility
- DoES: Democratization of engineering simulation
- Generative: Generative design
- Integration: Integration of systems and detailed sub-system simulations
- Twin(s): Engineering simulation digital twin(s)
The ASSESS Initiative is planning on publishing Strategic Insight papers related to each of these themes that will be made available on a “members only” basis.
The Generative Design Theme Strategic Insight Paper is: “Understanding a Generative Design Enabled Design Process Paradigm Shift.”
Nuts and Bolts of Paper
The vision for generative design is to enable a paradigm shift in the current design processes via the creation of computer-generated designs as early as the concept stage by design engineers, according to the ASSESS Initiative.
In the recommended approach of accounting for function and cost, the geometry is not the design, but the function and performance with known cost characteristics represent the design; the geometry is just an instance to provide the design function and performance, according to the ASSESS Initiative.
Using the Generative Design Capability Assessment Model to capture requirements allows the potential user of Generative Design to understand what capabilities are required to support their planned application scenario(s) and to compare those requirements to available capabilities from available Generative Design workflows.
A Suitability Index can be calculated for each Generative Design category of capability by dividing each applicable workflow capability rating by the corresponding application scenario requirements value.
The inclusion of Generative Design in the early phase of design where it delivers the broadest benefit will require organizations to rethink roles, methods and processes, the ASSESS Initiative reports.
Generative Design represents the next big technology driver in the Engineering Simulation domain with the potential to enable a significant paradigm shift in how products, buildings and infrastructures are designed via computer-generated algorithms based on proper specification of use cases, design space, performance objectives and design constraints, according to the ASSESS Initiative.
“The vision of the ASSESS Initiative is to significantly increase the use and benefit of Engineering Simulation. This Strategic Insight Paper regarding Generative Design Enabled Design Process Paradigm Shift is a major step forward toward the ASSESS Vision,” says Joe Walsh, CEO & co-founder, ASSESS Initiative.
